“Notes to Self” seeks to address the problem of cognitive biases. Cognitive biases are systematic errors in thinking that affect the decisions and judgments people make. For instance ‘Confirmation bias’ is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms one’s preexisting beliefs or hypotheses. Cognitive biases can lead to discrimination, prejudice, stereotypes, and racism.
“Notes to Self” is a set of designed objects that comprise a work space. Each object displays a message encouraging the user to be militant against cognitive biases. The piece sets up an environment where people constantly remind themselves to accept different people and opinions different from their own.
